Will dying my hair ruin my hair?

I've highlighted my hair a lot lately, but I keep my hair relatively short, and I do conditioning treatments regularly and don't use a flat iron or anything...so my hair seems pretty healthy.

I died my hair brown with a semi-permanent about a week ago, with the intention of rehighlighting it to sort of "start over" since the highlights were taking over, but the brown faded and so now I want to dye it again, this time with a permanent colour.

Does putting brown permanent dye on your hair damage it a lot? or is it mainly the lightening of hair that is bad for it because it strips the hair down?? I don't want to start losing hair!

If the color is off, there are leave on neutralizers that will cut down on the brassiness of colors. You can do this before you color and it will replenish the luster of your hair.
