Does dying your hair darker make it healthier?

I'm a natural brunette but i have been highlighting my hair for years now...Does dying your hair to a darker color make it healthier and shine.. or does it have the same drying out effects as highlighting?

It has the opposite affect - all the chemicals in dye hurts your hair. Try to find a henna treatment at the store. That will darken up your hair and it's natural!

Good Luck!!!

It's not as bad but it still drying to the hair. It looks healthier because it covers the ends with color but it is not much better than hilighting. The product is not as strong but it still damages the hair. it can make it shiny from the coating the color puts on the hair but if it's dry its still going to be dry.

any chemical proccessing you do to your hair including dying damages it...so technically it does not make ur hair healthier.

one tip to having healthy hair is a mayonase pack. Yes, the white stuff you smear on sandwiches. It sounds weird, but I swear it works. :)

Sometime, when your hair is dry, take a jar of mayo and smear it on your hair. Then, wrap it up for a couple hours and let it set, then go wash it out. (It's a little greasy, so it may take a couple shampoos to get it all out)

The protein from the eggs in the mayo helps strengthen and soften your hair and it will look fabulous! :)

You can also add eggs to the mayo if you want.

Nothing can repair the damage, but semi-permanent dyes can make your hair feel and look softer and healthier. Permanent dyes that contain chemicals like peroxide will damage your hair whether they are light or dark, but semi-permanent and temporary dyes frequently do not have any harsh chemicals and often have good conditioners in them. Don't forget that hair dye is carcinogenic it is generally recommended to avoid dying your hair until you are covering your grays. Ask your stylist.

No way....im a natural brunette and i died my hair to black # 1 for years till it was discontinued, then went to a redish black...destroyed my hair..started with the dryness, and no hot oil or conditioner treatment helped.after that the split ends came even a week after being cut.so id say unless hair dye ingridence have changed in the last 5 years then id keep it the way it is..

It doesn't make it healthier. For the most part, it hides damage better. Lightening, however, is rougher on the hair.
