Is it safe to bleach highlights in long dark brown hair that has been dyed for over 20 years?

I stopped dying my hair 4 months ago when I decided it was too much of an uphill battle. Now I have a stark contrast between the new gray (silver/white) and the old dark brown. I can only wear my hair pulled back otherwise it looks really strange (ike a skunk!). I'm afraid to cut it short because I have always had long hair. My daughters tell me I would look bad with short gray hair and I think they are right. I'm considering having it bleached with highlights/blended with brown hair dye but am also afraid this will damage my hair. I understand they can not highlight it gray (only blonde). It is fine and currently in fair condition considering I've been coloring it for so long. I am 52 years old and my hair is past my shoulders. The new hair growth is probably 95% silver/white. My goal is to have shoulder length healthy natural gray hair. Considering my fears and my goal, what do you think is the best option?

I don't see any reason why you can't put bleach highlights in your hair. I think it's a good idea and will help blend your hair, like you said above. Your best bet would be to dye your regrowth brown and then put your highlights in. Make sure you condition your hair deeply before you bleach it. I recommend going to Sally Beauty Supply. Buy a good conditioning packet- or you can buy cholesterol from just about any drug store, leave it on for several hours under a cap, wrapped in a towel. As for your highlights, for the most natural look, do small strands, like pull it through a cap. Also, make sure to deep condition after! Good Luck

well theres this pantene shampoo that eliminates damage such as that so if you buy a shampoo like that and use it for at least a week you should be okay.

im not sure but i just bleached my hair that it was pretty brown and then dyed it 4 my first time it didnt hurt my hair much it is starting to come out when i brush my hair though u get lots of knots. yeah i think it would b ok. :)oh and by the way i dyed my hair blue and it turned out perfectjust so u no if u bleach i would dye it blue but its ur choice mine turned out the best slue iv ever seen .....have fun
